GRYLLUS

"The gryllus is a frightening but pitiable creature that has spread all through the desert, filling one of the lowest tiers on the food chain. Its origin has been traced back to a highly intelligent, but physically unattractive gnome wizard who sought a way to improve his appearance for the sake of the lady he fancied. His spell went awry and imprisoned him in the form of a gryllus, stunting his mental capacity such that he completely forgot his former self. Worst still, the new form proved to be asexual in nature and multiplied rapidly, spreading across the desert and filling a niche below even the lowest form of predator."
